I needed to clear my head today, and my bugs are in need of a change in substrate, so, I packed a shovel, a couple of plastic bags, and went for a walk in the forest with my dog. Did I forget to mention refreshments? Always take a bottle of water with you, or in my case, a Sirkka-Smoothie.

Entis sirkka smoothie

What could possibly be a Sirkka-Smoothie? Well, you can guess it’s a smoothie, and if you think just a little bit, since I’m in the middle of the 60-day bug challenge, sirkka must have something to do with insects. Well you’re right, sirkka means cricket in Finnish.

I was extremely curious about this smoothie and it’s amazing that it survived 10 days into this challenge. First of all, I really like smoothies, they’re probably my favourite beverage, secondly, most of the products containing edible insects that I know of are “solids”, I’ve heard you can make mean smoothies, just I never got to it until tasting this one. There is one sure thing, I will be trying to make some myself! (We’ll see were that gets us…)

Now drinking a smoothie always seems so natural to me, so let’s check the ingredients of this one together:

Water, apple puree, mango puree (19%), apple juice concentrate, carrot puree, lemon juice concentrate, powder from cultivated tropical house crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus)(0,5%), ginger powder.

Yeah, now that I listed the ingredients, I realise I forgot to mention, the smoothie is mango flavoured. (And I love mangoes, so it’s the perfect mix.) There are different flavours, but that is of no importance at this point.

So, what does it taste like? Weirdly enough, I wouldn’t say mango. I would totally swear I am drinking a tomato juice, but with a bit more sugar.  And you can check again, there are no tomatoes in this smoothie. Maybe I’m mistaken, but that’s what it feels like to me.

Let me tell you about the creators of this smoothie: Entis.

Entis Logo

Entis is a very new company, founded in January 2017 and their first real product was launched shortly after the legalization of insects as food in Finland in September 2017.

Since then they have developed 4 product families: chocolates (that you’ll hear about soon), smoothies, meat replacement and protein snacks.

Entis’ core value is simple. To do good. However, in our world, you have to be practical, it’s impossible for a company to live solely off ideology. So, they decided to make products that were easy to approach and at a reasonable price. They do their best to keep a balance between economics and sustainability.

I am happy to announce, that I have a Finnish quote: Oispa kaljaa, torille!

I actually tried to cheat and translate this sentence on Google, but Finnish is such a hard language, that even Google Translate couldn’t help me. I guess I just wasn’t destined to know!

Let’s rate this smoothie! On a scale from 1 to 10:

  • The Mango Sirkka-Smoothie scores a 9/10. All I have to say is “Yaaay smoothies!”. I’m still curious as to why it tastes like tomato juice, or maybe my taste buds are tricking me. Anyhow, congrats on this delicious drink!
