You’ve heard of Netflix and chill, today I’m going to Netflix and grasshopper. It’s pretty much the same, except in the latter, you add grasshoppers. That doesn’t mean I can’t have my M&Ms while binge watching my series, right?

Netflix and grasshoppers

When I told you about the fresh insect skewers I ate on the first day, I also told you about dried and seasoned bugs you can find in our Western countries.

I wanted to show you that you can eat bugs without making your day any different. You can replace your crisps by grasshoppers and still enjoy your evening, if you want to share them with friends, insects make a great social experience. I’m not going to lie, I like junk food, so I’ll take it step by step, I won’t going changing my whole diet for you guys. (Sorry.)

I know bugs can be hard to try the first time, you’re just too scared to dig in, I get it. And it’s totally OK. But when you’re watching your favourite series, just don’t think about it, take one like you’d eat pop-corn, and then you’ll realise you’ll have finished them in no-time, and you’ll need more!

Today I’ll be eating Pepper & Dried Tomatoes flavoured Grasshoppers from Jimini’s. This product was actually given to me by 21bites, an online retailer, but I’ll tell you a bit more about them after.

If you’re bored, you can even try and make your favourite characters eat insects! Francis seemed interested, and he’s the President of the United States. Sorry for the spoiler, although it was pretty obvious…

House of cards bugs

Sadly, I have already eaten fresh insects. So now coming back to dried ones is nearly disappointing. The grasshoppers taste similar to peanuts, just with a crispy texture. If I were to describe it, I would say peanut and tomato flavoured crisps, that is not something you eat every day is it? I wouldn’t say that they taste bad, I’m just not used to it and I’m eating M&Ms at the same time, they don’t make a great mix.

I will recommend them if you want to hang out and watch Netflix with your best friend or partner and try something new. You can buy them on 21 bites’ website.

But what is 21bites ? I didn’t realise the banner was a GIF before putting it up, but I love GIFs so here it is.

21bites was founded in October 2017, not so long ago you may say, and they had a long testing period in which they tried hundreds of products from all over the world (kind of like me in this challenge.) 21bites is actually an online retailer who sells insect-based products from lots of companies around Europe.

Their first project was a magazine about entomophagy: L’Entomofago. It is a bit like my blog, I’m sure if you’re reading this, you’d love to check out their website too here.

At 21bites, they wanted to focus on 3 main characteristics for their products.

  • Origin: They decided to market only made-in-Eu entoproducts, to be sure of their compliance with the European rules on food safety.
  • Taste and texture: They tried and selected what they thought are the best entoproducts today available on the European market.
  • Production capability: this industry is still populated by a lot of start-ups, but to guarantee a constant supply, a certain production capability is needed.

Like myself, they don’t believe edible insects alone could save the world, but they strongly believe that they are a crucial part of the solution to properly feed an increasing population without destroying the environment.

21bites is all about bringing the best and safest products to the market, and their core values are quality, reliability, competence and honesty.

To what I know, they want to focus on selling existing products that are well-made, allowing them to offer a wider variety of products under a same banner.

Now, this is awkward, but I think I forgot to ask them to share a few words in their native language, which is Italian if I’m not mistaken. 21bites, if you’re reading this, please share a couple of words in the comments below so I can edit them back into the article, thanks!

Grasshopper snacks

Ladies and gentleman, rating time! On a scale from 1 to 10:

  • These pepper & dried tomatoes grasshoppers would score a 4/10. I know it seems not great, maybe even unfair, but frankly I’m not in the right context to eat them. These snacks are made to be shared, you have fun by trying something new with your friends, daring each other, realising that they’re not bad. But that’s it, not so bad. I think, for me, I’ll use the rest of the box for a recipe I’ll be trying in a few days that contains grasshoppers, they will probably score better even though they are exactly the same. You’ll have to wait and see.

If you’re looking to try insects with your friends, family or even colleagues, have a fun night, yeah these snack boxes are the way to go, you’ll enjoy seeing the insects whole, and it’s fun to watch everyone’s reactions, you can find them on their website by clicking here. If you’re doing it solo, on the other hand, we’ll find something else for you, try and have a look through the list in the first article to find something for yourself.

I hope you enjoyed this article, if you want to read more, please don’t hesitate to follow me on this blog and on my social media accounts. If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them, please leave a comment.
